Lesson 11: Wrap Up

11.5 was an interesting experience and timely since so much has changed since 23 Things. I learned some things I did not know, but most of it I was already familiar with. This is a good way to help staff learn about the technology SAPL offers so they may feel confident in instructing patrons. This kind of training in person would be ideal, but hardly feasible. This is a good alternative.

Lesson 10 Challenge

Bexar.org---Bexar County website, Elections dept for polling locations Texas.gov---Official website of the state of Texas, renewing driver's licenses USA.gov---US government portal, looking names & addresses of Representatives and Senators both in Washington and locally. For those that have access to technology, government apps could be extremely useful. But there are so many who do not have access to technology and this limits their access. To be honest I have no idea if this type of access will make us more or less of a democratic society. It is very possible that ease of access will prompt more individuals to let their voice be heard via these websites/apps. This would be a big change from what is being voiced now.

Lesson 9 Part 3: Library Digital Offerings-Freegal

Freegal is a very nice service and I use it a lot.

Lesson 7 Part 1 Challenge

Sorry no selfies available... :-)

Lesson 6 Part 2 Challenge

I can't really say social media has had a negative impact on my life. Perhaps at first with Facebook, but now, since I rarely post, and what I do post is worded carefully I have had no negative responses.

Lesson 6 Part 1 Challenge

Social Networking in my life is at best occasional. At first I was very addicted to FaceBook, but in the last year I have fallen off and only check it once in awhile. In the beginning I only friended people I actually new in person, then a few others crept in. Now I use it mostly for family, friends and topics of interest and rarely post. I really like Pinterest and my use is fairly frequent. I do use for work--many librarians post Teen activity and craft boards, which is useful. I am a member of LinkedIn for professional purposes. Other social media sites I rarely use. I'm not of the generation who likes to put everything out there, so using this medium is not that important to me.

Lesson 5 Challenge

The challenge I chose did not let me write. Will try again.

Lesson 3 Part 2 Challenge

Three libguides for the public: HeritageQuest Online For family history lovers a wealth of information that is available through this database. And accessible at home. This is one that I always suggest for the genealogy questions I get. Steampunk Most readers in Science Fiction and Fantasy have encountered the unique world of Steampunk. Think Wild Wild West tv show, or even the movie. That is Steampunk---it's literature, it's an aesthetic, a way of life and totally fascinating. A good place to start. Gardening in South Texas Gardening in Texas can be a challenge, especially in South Texas. Besides knowing the growing region we're in there a lot of other factors. This guide helps one decide which plants will thrive or if it would be better to xeriscape? And what herbs? Two Libguides for Staff: Connect at SAPL Databases Help Connect at Central is a pretty impressive digital learning area. The branches are not so lucky to have these resources but pointing out all that is available to patrons while helping someone can be invaluable. Classes, trying out new devices, the resources of the Jobs and Small Business Center--this is good for the branches to at the very least be aware of. Another great source of information are the many databases the library subscribes to---genealogy, business, what to read next, school resources. Using a database can be daunting at first, but once tried, it's easy to find the right material needed.

Lesson 3 Part 1 Challenge

A woman was interested in her family's history and began her search using Ancestry.com in the library, printing out a pedigree chart first. Then using HeritageQuest she was able to locate some relatives living in Virginia around 1870s and found the family in the 1870 census of Virginia. She was very curious about how they lived their lives and by using the Images of America database she found pictures of the town where her ancestors lived around 1900. She happily dived in to her family genealogy.

Lesson 1 Part 3 Challenge

Following a blog. I added the COSAs 11/5 blog, Reading the Past Historical Fiction Blog and my tech liaison. I follow several blogs already so I am familiar with the process.

Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge: Outlook

I have already created a signature for my Outlook account. The official SAPL signature and my own favorite book quote.

Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge: Word

The most challenging thing about Word 2010 is still finding where all the functions went! I am slowly figuring things out, but it still doesn't seem intuitive. Where I think a function should be ends up in a different place entirely!--that makes no sense to me. :-) I inserted a clip art picture into the informational flyer I made using Word and sent it to my tech liaison.

Lesson 2 Part 2 Challenge 2

Screen Shots still a problem. Working on it. Finally got it.

Lesson 2 Part 2 Challenge 1

Understand snipping tool. Pretty easy.

Lesson 1, Part 2: Blogging

I had already created a blog a few years ago, so it was just a matter of updating and revising. I still find it easy to do.

Lesson 1, Part 1: Welcome to 11.5 COSAS

Beginning of a digital literacy project for the library I work for. It has been awhile since I've posted on this blog.
